TEIN*CC Newsletter #1 March 2017 (vol.1). Download: PDF

Editorial
On behalf of TEIN*CC, I would be pleased to publishing the First TEIN*CC Newsletter stepping with launching Asi@Connect project. TEIN*CC will publish this Newsletter for project development by enthusiastic and lively research activities. I hope that this Newsletter will be a starting point to the Global Networking.

During the TEIN4 project, we have achieved remarkable results by increasing backbone capacity with network traffic volume. In Asi@Connect phase, we have one of the main goals to develop more various joint research activities using TEIN network on global issues what we faced now like as climate change, food shortage and disaster management and to broaden practical research applications, telemedicine, eduroam, etc. For catching up new technology environment, we have to share research activities and do communication each other. In this aspect, TEIN*CC encourages this Newsletter to be a storage of information by sharing application activities applying new technologies of IoT, Big Data and VR. Furthermore, we hope that these research activities will contribute to the social and public benefit. For improving our quality of life, Our NREN partners will develop new case studies and introduce them each to each through this Newsletter.

TEIN*CC Newsletter will contain some Asi@Connect news: Governors’ meeting, events, case study, workshop training, partner activities and etc. The Newsletter would like to become multi channel rather than single way communication. Please share your network story and application activities anytime. Newsletter will always open to your creative and challenging stories. Through this communication, our NREN partners will have a chance to make new and successful collaboration story.

Since TEIN initiative, we have been communicating and understanding each other like as family and friends. Please continue to cooperate together for going forward to global collaboration through Asi@Connect. If you share continuously your activities and researches, it can be useful materials for all NRENs partners. It will be a way for the regional growth and unlimited development. Again, I hope that our partners have a close partnership through sharing your news.

                                                                                                          Sincerely,

                                               The president of TEIN*Cooperation Center,
                                                                                                 Hye Joo Yoon
Message To Asi@Connect Project Partners

R.S. Mani, Chair of Asi@Connect Governors' meeting said, "I take this pleasure in congratulating the entire team of Asi@Connect for a successful launch at New Delhi. I am sure Asi@connect in line with its successful predecessors TEIN3 & TEIN4 will continue to empower researchers globally to leverage this e-infrastructure information highway for public service projects. With this dedicated high capacity network, I look forward to more collaborations, as it will provide impetus to scientists, researchers and students from varied backgrounds and geographies to work closely for advancing development in critical and emerging areas. I would also like to thank the European commission and their sustained support in this endeavor that has, in my vision, the potential to transform research and education collaboration in the Asia and Europe region in the next 60 months. I look forward to a 5 year committed partnership with all member countries with a collective objective for sustained growth."

Jie An, Chair of Asi@Connect Steering Committee said, "Asi@Connect project is a continuation of, and builds on the successful stories of previous TEIN projects which greatly supported the regional and international network connectivities in Asia Pacific region. Asi@Connect provides a quite wider range of programs which covers not only network connectivity, but also the capacity development, testbed for advanced technologies and application promotion and collaborations. Asi@Connect is a great opportunity and also a challenge. With EC and all partners' support, I believe the joint efforts from all partners and related organizations will make Asi@Connect's another success."

Douglas, Vice Chair of Asi@Connect Steering Committee said, "On behalf of REANNZ (Research & Education Advanced Network New Zealand) and the science, education and research communities in New Zealand, we would like to take this opportunity to wish all our colleagues across the Asia Pacific region great success over the next 5 years. The ongoing support provided by the European Union and the member economies will no doubt result in many beneficial collaborations in the important areas of agriculture, climate science, disaster mitigation and medical improvements – all topics of great interest to the science communities (and general population) of the Asia Pacific region. In addition to the research outputs these projects will bring, Asi@Connect also demonstrates the economic, social and political benefits of collaboration across a widely dispersed geographic area containing a myriad of ethnic groups and economic systems. This will bring benefits to all of this most dynamic part of the world."

Mary Fleming, Chair of TEIN*CC Steering Committee said, " Congratulations to all at TEIN*CC and to all the TEIN Members who committed their time and expertise to build the TEIN network into what it is today.  It has been a great exemplar of collaboration between the NREN partners to the benefit of the Least Developed Countries in the Asia Pacific region.  It has been my privilege to Chair the TEIN*CC Steering Committee since its inception in 2011 and I have been greatly impressed by the dedication of the TEIN*CC staff and the foresight of the European Commission to fund the 4th generation of the TEIN Network known as Asi@Connect. On behalf of the Australian National Research and Education Network (AARNet) I wish Asi@Connect every success in the future."

David West from GÉANT said, "As the meetings and celebrations in Delhi demonstrated Asi@Connect is off to a flying start.  The phase’s 5 year term and generous EU funding mean there is a huge opportunity for research and education networking to benefit the whole region, especially the least developed countries. Even more than in previous phases all members of the region’s R&E community have the chance to contribute to the project. GÉANT wishes Asi@Connect every success and remains committed to continue to advise and support TEIN*CC and project partners along the way."

Suk Joon Son from MSIP of Korea said, "Since ASEM’s endorsement of TEIN initiative, TEIN has been dedicated for strengthening research cooperations in various areas such as economic, social, education and science: and raised mutual interests and understanding between Asia and Europe. Through this, the noble spirit, the co-prosperity of Asia and Europe, has been faithfully implemented. Now, I believe that Asi@Connect will act its meaningful role to improve the quality of life in TEIN participating countries and to expand common prosperity environment in this region."

Case study:

eduroam, a world–wide roaming access service, was designed and launched in Europe in 2003, providing access to research and education networks. Service users (researchers, scientists and students) can access eduroam’s wireless hotspots without the need for site specific credentials, and, therefore, sparing participants the burden of administering access to guest networks and of ensuring the privacy and security of quest users’ data. TEIN/Asi@Connect has supported to extend the benefits of the successful eduroam initiative to research and education users in seven Asia-Pacific countries with limited or no existing coverage with our eduroam partners, AARNet, CNU(Chonnam National University) and KISTI, REANNZ, SingAREN. On basis of this success, eduroam project(2015-2016) sponsored by TEIN has taken the worldwide total of installed hotspots(for wireless access) to over 12,000. Read More>>
