Participant:

System/Network administrators and IT managers from Universities and Research Organizations in Bhutan (52 participants)

Objective:

To introduce information security skills and measures to combat cyber threats

To help the participants in further strengthening their networks through adoptions of correct measures

To be able to audit their systems and accordingly implement all relevant measures to keep cyber security threats

Approach:

The Capacity Development Training Program is important for IT engineers and administrators, especially for emerging countries/economies. In Sep 2015, TEIN*CC provided “Campus Network Design & Operations and Linux System Administration” under the TEIN4, and it was successfully completed with 90 participants from various research and education institutes. However, information security has not been able to gain much attention partly because most of the efforts have been focused on development of the infrastructure itself. Hence a capacity development program was organized to the Network administrators and IT managers to provide practical skills and advance knowledge in network security area. This workshop was arranged by the Department of Information Technology & Telecom (DITT), Ministry of Information and Communications (MOIC), Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB) with financial support from Asi@Connect.

Program:

The five-day workshop presented participants, opportunities to familiarize themselves or reinforce their knowledge and skills in hardening their systems. The experienced Network Security Experts from APNIC delivered lectures and showed practical skills. The workshop also looked at some handy tools that the system owners can equip themselves with.

Enthusiastic and engaging discussions on policies and key concepts related to cyber security contributed to providing much-needed focus on how to sustain or maintain safety in the cyber environment down the line. The sessions provided much-needed information on notorious attacks and countermeasures to prevent or withstand them with good examples. The workshop came to end after five memorable days with most participants expressing their satisfaction with positive feedback.

Impact:

Through this program, the participants improved overall knowledge and practical skills on Network and system security, and awareness and basic skills for preventing and responding to cyber threat.
