Between 15-18 June 2015 at the coastal town of Porto, Portugal there was a gathering of 600+ NRENs researcher/scientist/engineers as well as major network vendor. It was truly a global gathering with a number of representatives from Asia, eg. Jin Tanaka at the Open Exchange session. There was a special session organised and chaired by A/Prof. Francis Lee Bu Sung (SingAREN & TEIN*CC) called” Application that transcend the Globe”. The session highlighted some of the research effort/activities in Asia which are as follows:

  • Prof. Shuji Shimizu, Kyushu University Hospital.   Telemedicine Project in Asia Pacific: Changing needs and current problems.
  •  Prof. Askar Kutanov, CAREN.   High-speed access to data from sensors and seismic stations- CAREN
  • Ms. Mary Fleming, AARnet. Square Kilometer Array(SKA) Project

In addition,  Hean Samboeun from CamREN, Cambodia NREN,  was selected as the TNC15 fellowship  for our region. Here is what he says about his experience at TNC15. ““TNC15 has been an enriching conference where I get to meet experts from the different NRENs and learn about activities and advance network technologies. It has provided me with some ideas on how NRENs expand collaboration and partners to develop and provide more services to the members. “.  (A big thanks you to Ms. Gyongyi Horvath and Ms. Cathrin Stover for organising the TNC15 fellowship.)

In conclusion, Asia region was well represented in the recent TNC15 Networking conference.  It has benefited both participants from Asia as well as participants from other regions due to the opportunity to network with other NRENs researcher/scientist/engineers.  I look forward to more such opportunities where we can share our experience with our other regions, we live on the same globe.
